Drought Tied to Roanoke and Jamestown Hardships
Archaeologists link 16th century drought to the Roanoke disappearance and Jamestown starvation, noting the era’s extreme drought fostered famine and death. Dennis Blanton of William and Mary says the drought worsened colonization, though exact Roanoke fate remains unclear. The study appears in Science.

Drought Strains Early Virginia Settlers Across Jamestown Era
Research by Blanton and Arkansas tree ring experts links severe droughts to high mortality among Roanoke and Jamestown settlers. Only 38 of 104 Roanoke colonists survived their first year, and 4,800 of 6,000 Jamestown residents died 1607 to 1625. Tree rings show drought years 1587 1589 and 1606 1612. Local climate surprised newcomers along the tidal James River.
