Washington AP reports that last week’s rain boosted crop prospects overall despite delays in corn fields. Central and southern plains, the Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley saw 1 to over 3 inches of rainfall while the Corn Belt faced slowed field work. Corn planting reached 7 percent nationwide by April 19, with Georgia at 92 percent and Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin near zero. Cotton planting was 25 percent in major states, grain sorghum in Texas at 65 percent, spring and rice at 47 percent. Winter wheat remained fair to good and developing ahead of recent years, Kansas wheat jointed 70 percent, Oklahoma headed 10 percent, with rain needed to replenish soil moisture. Planting spring wheat was 43 percent, oats varied regionally but overall above normal seeding.
