Goppert gym floor problems prompt temporary sidelining
Ottawa Recreation Commission director says moisture trapped under the Ottawa Community Recreation Center/Goppert Building floors caused bubbles to form over a year. The floor will be torn up and re-laid at no cost to taxpayers, with completion hoped in 30 to 60 days.

Teen Eagle Scout project warns of tree pest arrival
Hemmerla a 14 year old Boy Scout works with Ottawa parks and recreation to raise awareness of the emerald ash borer. Since emerald ash borers were detected in Wyandotte County in 2012 efforts curb wood shipments and plant materials. The pest has killed millions of trees across multiple states and Kansas. Officials plan 65 traps in nine counties to monitor infestations and prevent spread. Hemmerla notes the larvae make distinctive D shaped galleries and that prevention includes systemic insecticides and protective sprays. He asserts the pest will reach Ottawa and Franklin County sooner or later.
