Thomas K. Collins, now 59, could be eligible for parole in May after being convicted of second degree murder and aggravated battery for killing his step-daughter Latrina Marie in 1980. He was sentenced to 25 years to life and is imprisoned at Lansing Correctional Facility in Lansing.
Former detective De La Torre, who led the 1980 murder inquiry, met with Franklin County Attorney Stephen Hunting this week to review the case. Both men maintain Collins should remain jailed, with Hunting calling the facts a sad set and opposing parole at this time.
West Franklin school board president Thayne Bush files for stalking protection after alleged confrontations with Henry Snodgrass following two bond meetings March 27 and 28. The planned 16 million bond would consolidate the district into a single Pomona campus, facing a June 4 vote.
After a March 27 candidate forum at West Franklin High School, Snodgrass allegedly poked Bush in the chest and criticized district spending. Bush claimed Snodgrass used vulgar language toward Superintendent Dotson Bradbury until a security officer escorted him out.
West Franklin district schools in Pomona were briefly locked down for about 15 minutes at 10:30 a.m. as Franklin County and Osage County sheriffs and Kansas Wildlife and Parks officers searched near the area for suspects tied to a state case. The lockdown was lifted after officials said there was no danger to the public.
