Graves urged to hold line on tobacco tax

Health advocates urged Gov. Bill Graves to back a 65 cent per pack cigarette tax hike to raise 111 million for the state budget. supporters say the public backs higher levies while some lawmakers fear a 65 cent rise. Opposition or caution comes from House leaders preferring 50 cents, with the Senate also weighing 50 cent proposals. The coalition argues higher taxes will curb smoking and fund deep budget cuts.
