Bell long distance plan sparks Kansas regulator scrutiny
Southwestern Bell proposes a $30 monthly flat rate for unlimited within-area-code long distance with a $60 business option called Local Plus. Regulators and rivals say the plan preserves Bell’s local monopoly, as access fees to Bell’s network undercut competitors like AT&T, MCI and Sprint. The dispute centers on whether the reform favors Bell, which dominates same-area-code long distance in Kansas valued at about $100 million annually.
