Barn Blaze Destroys Hay and Antiques in Rantoul
A cigarette sparked a fire that destroyed a barn on Harrison Road housing three tons of hay and $4,500 worth of antiques owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barkley. The Rantoul Fire Department labored four hours to control the blaze, which smouldered into the morning. Mrs. Barkley noted her grandson was cutting a hedge nearby and sat on hay to smoke when the flame jumped to a bale.
