Ottawa Power Hit By Grounding Transformer Fault
Ottawa city officials blamed a grounding transformer in KCP&L interconnect for a three hour blackout that began about 6 a.m. Sunday. Utilities Director Jack Davis said the faulty transformer caused the automatic shutdown of the main generator after an open circuit fed back into the system. The city had been drawing 2,500 kilowatts from KCP&L under a firm power contract and Mo Kan Pool rules. The city expects new 6,000 kilowatt generators to be online soon, after which it will have sufficient capacity to meet generation and reserve needs.
