Associated Press market basket survey shows March prices down 1.3 percent across 13 cities with a 3.6 percent year‑to‑date drop. Sugar fell and meat prices eased with beef frankfurters and pork chops down in several cities, while frozen orange juice rose in 11 markets.
The Kansas Senate approved a bill banning bottle rockets from sale or use starting next January with a fine up to 100 dollars for violations. An amended provision extends the ban to use as well as sale and the measure returns to the House. Also approved was a bill barring sale of metal beverage containers with detachable tabs. Both moves accompany 23 bills ending in final votes after debates.
United Mine Workers roving pickets shut down non-union mines in West Virginia and eastern Kentucky after rank and file rejected a proposed contract by 2 to 1. Leaders warn a long strike ahead as unions fear weaker security and more nonunion coal.
The Kansas House Agriculture Committee moved two bills to revise corporate farming laws. One relaxes limits on family and authorized farm corporations while preserving a broad prohibition on corporate ownership of farms, with a clause about land leased back for farming. The other requires corporations and limited partnerships holding agricultural land to report leasing recipients irrigation levels and post July 1, 1981 acquisitions.
