FBI Arrests Sailor for Supplying Secrets to Soviets at UN

New York FBI arrested Yeoman Cornelius Drummond, a 33 year old Navy veteran stationed at Newport, on charges of passing classified Navy documents to Soviet UN officials. He was seized outside a Westchester diner with two Soviet diplomats present. Authorities say eight classified ties and US Navy papers were found in his car. If convicted, he faces possible death or life imprisonment.

Cape Canaveral reports Walter M Schirra Jr in final training for a six orbit mission after a 644 hour simulated flight Friday. He sits in the Sigma 7 atop the Atlas booster for a morning launch next Wednesday. Flight lasts about 9 hours 11 minutes with a Pacific Ocean landing northeast of Midway Island.

Firemen Hurt Fighting Blaze Aboard Vessel

Flames wrecked the 549 foot Rio Jackal an Argen tine cargo passenger ship berthed at a New York pier. Over four hours and a crew of more than 200 firemen battled dense smoke many were injured with 17 hospitalized none serious. Only 10 to 15 of 70 passengers were aboard when the fire broke out Friday night and all escaped unharmed. Passengers included the Argentine diplomat’s wife and two of their four children as the ship listed before the blaze subsided.

A freak accident at Venice station killed two people and injured 30 when a wall collapsed into the dining room as a train entered. The motorman, hospitalized in shock, said brakes had failed.

A New York coastal storm dropped heavy rain and winds up to 45 mph, causing at least 13 highway deaths and drowning a fisherman. In heavy fog the American supertanker Titan struck the Colombian motor vessel Rio Magdalena about 20 miles south of San Francisco Bay. Both ships reported damage and a Coast Guard response as the Titan remained afloat and crew actions on the Rio Magdalena were clarified.

Two Die in Route 52 Head-On Crash near Fishkill

Two Dutchess County residents were killed and four others injured Friday night in a two car head on collision on Route 52 just east of here according to state police. The crash occurred on a rural stretch as authorities investigated and motorists rerouted around the scene. Local responders transported the injured to area hospitals for treatment.

Kingston Man Killed After Stepping Into Roadway

Michael L. Devine, 51, of Kingston, was struck by a car and died Friday night at a street intersection in Kingston. Police say he stepped from the curb into the vehicle's path.

Three Men Die In Rome Crash

In Central New York near Griffiss Air Force Base entrance a car carrying three men two airmen and a civilian employee crashed. S Sgt Eugene D Cole 35 Centrahoma Oklahoma A 27e Ricardo Cortez 19 San Antonio Texas and Dewitt Coklin 37 Rome were killed. The car failed to negotiate a curve struck a street sign pole and a wire fence before hitting a tree on a rain slicked road. Cole and Cortez belonged to the 4039th Organizational Maintenance Squadron SAC at Griffiss.

Designer of Air Force Academy dies at 65

Louis Skidmore, 65, renowned designer of the Air Force Academy and buildings on four continents, including American consulates in Germany and cities in Venezuela, died Thursday at his Winter Haven home. He received the Gold Medal of the AIA in 1957.
