The Associated Press reports 299 traffic deaths over the four day Thanksgiving weekend, from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday. Officials note good driving conditions and the Friday off contributed to a near average toll compared with nonholiday periods.
Snow and rain sap travel as state toll rises with 12 traffic deaths since the four day holiday began at 6 p m Wednesday. Fires claim three lives and seven more die in other accidents as the weekend continues until midnight Sunday.
A major winter storm blasted the northeast with heavy snow, torrential rain and gale winds. Up to 2.5 inches of rain drenched southern New England while western New York faced engine- blocking snow and 60 mph winds. Flooding forced evacuations in Boston’s housing projects and coastal outages hit Connecticut. Providence logged 2.1 inches. Boston 1.40 inches. Portland 1.68. Augusta 1.52 inches. Temperatures plunged into the 20s and 30s as snow spread from New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey into northern New England.
Upstate New York faced a winter blast with eight inches of snow at Carthage and widespread snow across the region. Temperatures dropped to the 20s, roads iced over, and travel became hazardous with Lake Erie and Niagara County routes reporting heavy snow and icy conditions.
