An Irish Army soldier stands guard behind barbed wire at Curragh Army Camp after Sean Mac Stiofain was transferred from Dublin Mater Hospital. The Justice Minister said the move was for security and to safeguard patients and staff.
U S planes accidentally dropped several 500 pound bombs on a populated area south of Da Nang killing 19 civilians and wounding 99. Twelve bombs fell about 244 miles west of Hoi An and 15 miles south of Da Nang. The cause and full details are under investigation.
The Commerce Department reports October deficit at 415 million dollars, with exports up 5 percent to 4.364 billion and imports rising 2.3 percent to 4.779 billion. It ends a 13 month run of deficits and signals a reversal of prior trends. Oil imports eased from September highs while foreign cars, steel, and other metals added to imports.
Washington reports negotiations between the United States and Cuba on resolving the air hijacking issue. With no diplomatic ties, the U S position in Havana is held by the Swiss ambassador. Brigham Young University student journalists Roger Aylworth and Mike Gygi faced subpoenas in 4th District Court over a two part Daily Universe report on Utah County drug abuse and alleged police corruption. Gygi refused to disclose sources citing fear for his and friends safety while Aylworth pledged to avoid jail. The two claimed the unnamed officer took bribes from major dealers and protected criminals by writing excessive arrests that violated defendants rights.
London based Daily Express claims Martin Bormann fled to Argentina in 1948 by paying 200 million dollars to dictator Juan D Peron. A Peron spokesman said he knew nothing of Hitler era figures. The article notes Farage’s five part series and suggests Bormann may be alive in Argentina on a Krupp ranch.
Patrick Murray, 60, of Cohoes was indicted on first degree perjury in Albany County Court for lying about a $200 cash source amid the Oct 27 jail escape. A sealed indictment followed a grand jury probe that linked five guards to a $2,000 theft from escapees.
Dr. Jack Schreiber of Canfield Ohio warned at the AMA biannual convention that many members are joining unions foundations or other groups or quitting. U S Rep James Hastings announced a 412000 government grant to restore flood damaged city parks in Corning New York. The funds come from the Economic Development Administration and the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation of the Interior Department. Corning was hit by the Eastern floods in late June.
At Buffalo International Airport two air force soldiers were taken off an Allegheny Airlines flight bound for New York City. Alfred Hill 17 was charged with making a false report of hijacking and Charles D Hick 17 with carrying a concealed weapon after FBI agents seized a four inch knife.
