Pierce Lehmbeck, 32, named Associated Press bureau chief for New York State at Albany by AP General Manager Wes Gallagher. He succeeds Earl Aronson and has served since 1967 as assistant chief of the New York Bureau after earlier roles as news editor and World Services Desk staffer. Lehmbeck, a Florida State graduate, began with AP in 1955 and has held posts in Tallahassee Oklahoma City Sioux Falls and New York. He is married with two sons and a daughter.
Everett C. Thomas 47, longest U S heart transplant survivor, died at St. Luke’s Hospital Houston after complications from a second donor heart. He had received his first transplant May 3 and his second donor heart Thursday. Doctors cited bleeding and kidney failure leading to irreversible cardiac arrest at 4 a.m. Thomas was from Phoenix and had endured a rejected first heart.
President-elect Nixon keeps his secretary of state choice open seeking a career diplomat with long foreign service background. Rob ert D Murphy, 74, a State Department liaison, is viewed as fitting the profile while age and internal deliberations limit progress.
