The Department of Labor says the cost of living rose eight tenths of a percent in October and prices are 7.9 percent higher than a year earlier. Energy, fuel oil, gasoline, clothing, mortgage costs and health expenses pushed the index up while meat and poultry fell, offset by higher outlays for meals away from home.
The Pentagon has moved over 100 U S B52s back to the United States from Guam. About 85 turned up from Guam as U S units went on alert during the Middle East crisis. Remaining B52s shelter on Guam and in Thailand.
President Nixon told a closed Republican Governors Association session in Memphis that he will disclose all facts about Watergate and related issues. Governors said he apologized for any burden and promised further documents, court actions, and open briefings to answer key questions on his finances ITT affair and the milk-price case.
Interior Secretary Morton warned the eastern United States could see power brownouts by December due to a fuel crisis with shortages deepening into 1974. He cited eight percent below year end consumption and up to twenty percent in early 1974, with residual oil shortages hitting power plants first and heating oil and diesel shortages arriving late January.
A passenger bus overloaded with religious pilgrims plunged 141 feet into a mountain ravine near San Nicolas Mexico killing 15 people and injuring 43. Survivors said the driver was drunk and many were children with ten missing.
In Los Angeles AP reports comedian Allen Sherman known for the 1960s album My Son the Folk Singer died at 49. He had emphysema asthma and obesity and passed Tuesday night from respiratory failure in his Hollywood apartment. In Memphis AP notes energy policy talk about possible Sunday gasoline station closures to address shortages.
LBJ Library director Harry Middleton says Lyndon B. Johnson donated 200000 documents to the United States before a 1969 tax write off change. He notes Johnson likely claimed a tax exemption only for those papers, out of about 31 million, while the remainder were bequeathed by Johnson through his will after the 1969 change.
Skylab 3 astronauts Commander Gerald P. Carr and crew began medical checks on Tuesday as they enter the sixth day of their 84 day mission aboard Space Center Houston. They prepare for a Thanksgiving day space walk and continue research for the longer voyage ahead.
Former mayor Ralph Shapiro called on Supreme Court Justice-elect Edward Crawford to resign from the Assembly on December 1 to lengthen the campaign period for a special election to fill the vacancy. He said counsel advises Crawford would not lose pensions or benefits, while Crawford plans to resign December 31 to avoid interruptions in retirement and insurance. Shapiro, a possible candidate for the seat, says the delay blocks minority party organization and favors Republicans who have held the seat for decades. A mid February special election is anticipated under Governor Rockefeller’s call and state law requiring 30 to 40 days after a vacancy.
Tax collection figures suggest the 1973-74 state budget surplus could be five times Rockefeller administration projections. A midyear summary estimated a $52 million surplus, while income tax receipts for seven months total $2.19 billion, implying year-end totals near $3.57 billion under similar trends.
