Sailor Captain Israel Adams in Battle on Sandy Creek
A rediscovered Utica 1848 narrative recalls Captain Israel Adams of Liverpool Onondaga County New York detailing a War of 1812 engagement at Sandy Creek. With Captain Applin leading 100 riflemen, seven boats carried 14 guns and a 400 strong enemy force was repelled in about twenty minutes leaving four hundred and seven wounded and no American fatalities. The account notes later success with new vessels rigged for service at Sackets Harbor and Kingston retreat of the enemy fleet.

Heavy rains caused the Mohawk River to overflow its banks near Herkimer County forcing dozens to flee homes. Up to 100 people crowded an emergency shelter in Fort Plain as sections of roads and the Erie Canal remained delayed in reopening amid a 100 mile stretch of flood damage.
