Democrats Draft Platform Pledges Broad Civil Rights and Reform
A 150 member platform committee recast the preliminary draft with votes defeating amendments on abortion rights and LGBT employment discrimination. It adopted a death penalty abolition stance and rejected a $6,500 guaranteed income for a family of four while endorsing tax reform, social security funding, revenue sharing, and anti monopoly measures. The platform emphasizes jobs for all, deconcentration of big industries, stronger anti trust laws, and a phased tax repeal plan with a call to curb tax loopholes. A wage and education plank supports busing per Supreme Court rulings, while military cuts are proposed with rapid withdrawal from Indochina. The draft spans environmental, veterans, housing, and farm policies and must be mailed to delegates by Thursday.
