An American infantry company on a search mission near Dak To suffered 76 killed and 24 wounded after a North Vietnamese assault. The 173rd Airborne Brigade unit, with about 150 men, endured a seven hour engagement on a 4000 foot ridgeline as air strikes and gunships supported the defense.
Five airmen riding together in Oneonta, New York, lost control of their vehicle in downtown, hitting a tree and building. Gerard Wenck, 21, and John Reuter, 22, were killed. Donald Reuter, Zane Rudibaugh, and Donald Lovejoy were injured, hospitalized in serious or critical condition.
Spec. 4 Russell J. Dynes of Darien Center New York grabbed and hurled back a grenade hurled at a U S infantry squad near Chu Lai 330 miles north of Saigon The grenade exploded killing the Viet Cong attacker Dynes said he acted to save his comrades and prevent mass casualties.
Sen. Thomas J. Dodd vows to finish his current term and run again, saying he will seek vindication from Connecticut voters after the Senate censured him for converting at least 116,083 dollars of campaign funds to personal use. The chamber voted 92 to 5 to uphold the ethics finding, then 51 to 45 to drop a second double-billing charge.
In Rochester, a planned July 24 torchlight protest marking the third anniversary of Negro rioting was cancelled after Eastman Kodak Co. reached an agreement with civil rights group FIGHT on hiring practices. Florence, former FIGHT president, said the protest was called off following Kodak's accord.
Five teenagers from Nunda Swain and Hunt were killed when their car collided head on with a railroad bridge abutment on Route 245 four miles west of Nunda. Deputies said a sixth youth was dropped off prior to the collision. This followed another multi fatality auto crash in nearby Wyoming County the day before.
A 48 year old Delbert O Foltz of Rochester died two hours after a collision between his automobile and a truck at Route 96 near Farmington Thompson Hospital Canandaigua N Y.
Pamela Switzer, 23, a Pulaski second grade teacher, was among 34 dead when a Mohawk Airlines turbojet crashed near Bloomsburg Pennsylvania after takeoff from Elmira. Switzer had boarded at Syracuse Hancock Field en route to Camp Lejeune where she planned to teach next year. The 30 passengers and four crew members perished in the crash.
Mohawk Airlines chief Robert E Peach asked FBI Director J Edgar Hoover to probe a suspected sabotage in the plane crash near Blossburg Pennsylvania that killed 34. FBI says no sabotage evidence yet. FBI experts assist, NTSB joins, investigations to take a week to 10 days.
A Ballston Lake, New York man was killed early today in a two car collision along the Northway between Albany and Saratoga Springs.
California Governor Ronald Reagan electrified the Young Republican National Federation at its closing session in Omaha Nebraska. He attacked federal bureaucracy and Johnson era policies on poverty and Vietnam drawing sustained applause and chants of We want Reagan. He urged escalation in Vietnam and criticized opponents while pledging fiscal restraint and reforms.
Two Clay New York women Dr. Carol Ann Fisher 38 and Miss Karen Bouet 37 were killed when a 126 foot pine toppled onto their parked car at Maroon Lake campground Aspen Colorado wind snapped the tree about 16 feet above the ground. Dr Fisher was an assistant professor at Syracuse University's Maxwell School and Bouet a librarian there.
Johnson and Kosygin open Glassboro summit with five hour session and agree on Sunday talks. They discussed Middle East issues and Vietnam and aim for a nonproliferation treaty while caution remains about achieving immediate peace.
President Johnson said no new agreements were reached with Soviet Premier Kosygin at the Glassboro talks. He noted a shared desire for world peace for future generations and spoke to a Democratic fund raising crowd amid antiwar protests. Police clashed with demonstrators. about 30 were arrested and several injured. Johnson looked forward to another meeting with Kosygin.
In Baltimore, David McCartin, age 12, died after being struck by a single bolt of lightning during a Friday practice. Two other boys were hit. a sudden storm swept through the park as a baseball coach fed fly balls.
James Rowan and Mary Beth Ware hiked halfway up Mt. San Bernardino to wed near Slushy Meadows at 6,000 feet elevation. The 20 year old Rialto bride wore hiking boots and corduroy, and Rev. Kenneth Baumhoff of Rialto Lutheran Church officiated. The groom Ronan, 23, of San Bernardino said the ceremony had been planned for a year.
At the United Nations emergency session on the Middle East the Communist bloc factions argued over direct negotiations, Arabs urging action against Israel. Johnson and Kosygin continued summit talks, with Johnson warning that one meeting won’t bring peace. Saudi Arabia’s U N delegate pledged no solution without consensus.
In Syracuse New York a 24 year old man Willie C Lovett was shot to death today at his estranged wife Verona Lovett s apartment near downtown. Verona Lovett age 20 was arrested on a first degree manslaughter charge after a .22 caliber pistol and revolver were found at the scene.
