American Cavalry Foils Viet Cong Assault Near Saigon

A 500-strong Viet Cong battalion failed to overrun a U.S. armored cavalry bivouac 40 miles east of Saigon. The clash left 45 Viet Cong dead, 8 American and 31 wounded. U.S. planes conducted 130 missions nationwide, targeting Hanoi rail lines and the Thai Nguyen steel works as air and artillery support repelled the assault.

U S Jets Possibly Hit Soviet Vessel in Vietnam Waters

The Defense Department released that American F105 jets may have strafed the Turkistan, a 3,358 ton Soviet ship in Cam Pha, North Vietnam, after earlier denying the claim. Gen. John D. Ryan reported cannon fire from U S Air Force jets and the Pentagon said the investigation continues.

Ex FBI Agent Named New York Lottery Director

Ernest T. Bird a retired FBI agent was named director of the New York state lottery and Frank Carrk a Tax Department employee will supervise lottery ticket sales. Record 205 Summer Courses at SUCO Oswego Session

About 2,300 students are expected for State University College at Oswego summer session July 3 to Aug 8. Dr. Millard Harmon notes extended two and three week post sessions Aug 14-25 and Aug 14-Sept 1 offering two or three credits in 22 more courses. The Oswego campus hosts four federally funded and 14 state funded programs across the season including Title IV programs for educational media specialists and National Defense Education Act plus National Science Foundation institutes. Vincent Barone leads a program in biology fieldwork.

Three Die and Five Hurt in NYC Fire

Three people died and five others were injured in an early morning fire that swept through a three story apartment building in Schenectady New York. Fire officials said the blaze began shortly before 3 30 a m and recovery of the victims took place after dawn. Ellis Hospital reported several patients including Alice Scripter 63 and Helen Chandler 68 in critical condition with severe burns. George Wilt 69 and Catherine Hickock 66 were admitted for smoke inhalation in fair condition. One more person had minor injuries and was discharged.

The Civil Air Patrol halted air searches for a Canadian single engine Beachcraft Bonanza missing on a flight from Carterville Quebec to Philadelphia due to bad weather. The plane carrying three or four aboard was piloted by G Boisbert and bears CFAS markings.
