President Edward A. Bender of Penfield Mayor John O C Conway President Lawrence J Dwyer of State Firemen's Association Solvay Oswego Fire Chief John D Murray attended the convention here Thursday night at Hotel Pontiac with local officials and fire chiefs.
The 1600 Northwest pilots reach a final settlement after a six hour strike that began at midnight. National Mediation Board chair Leverett Edwards announced the accord saying the airline is back in operation and pilots back to work. Edwards noted a reduced flying time from 85 to 80 hours monthly and a special differential for Boeing 747 pilots, with earnings potential up to 65 000 to 70 000 annually.
Unidentified man and woman bodies found at Niagara Falls bottom as engineers slow river flow to permit inspection. Police report the woman’s body discovered Wednesday and the man’s Thursday after a man was seen leaping from the falls.
President Nixon names Air Force Gen John D. Ryan to the Joint Chiefs of Staff replacing Gen John Paul McConnell. If Senate ok, Ryan could become Air Force chief in August after a WWII bomber pilot with 58 missions. Also extended Gen Earle Wheeler as chairman and nominated Adm Thomas Moorer for two more years as chief of Naval Operations.
Albany AP reports the State University system awarded 34 234 degrees this year, a 16 percent rise from 1968. Graduations occurred at 60 campuses, including 32 community colleges, with 17 809 associate, 12 775 bachelor’s, 2 635 master’s, and 1 015 doctoral degrees. Among graduates 6 790 were recommended for teaching certification.

In Central Vietnam 7000 allied troops sweep the coastal plains in Operation Pipestone Canyon. Since May 25 the battle has left 332 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong dead, 51 prisoners, and 152 weapons captured. The force includes 4000 U.S. Marines, 2000 South Vietnamese infantry, and 1000 South Korean marines. U.S. Marine losses stand at 31 killed and 240 wounded. South Vietnamese 1 killed and 17 wounded. South Koreans 2 killed and 13 wounded. The 25 square mile Dodge City area contains bunkers and fortifications of several enemy units.
Gov. Rockefeller defers choosing a Court of Appeals successor to Kenneth B. Keating pending Nixon’s decision on the Abe Fortas vacancy. Harry D. Goldman of Rochester emerges as a possible candidate if Breitel goes to Washington, with Hogan or Hopkins as the NYC area appointee if that occurs.
The Niagara River on the American side near Goat Island is reduced to a trickle after work crews built a 600 foot cofferdam shifting flow to the Canadian Falls. Crews used 20 tons of dirt and rock and heavy equipment to seal the bed, with tests planned to study erosion and prevent future collapse. Visitors may walk the area and the Cave of the Winds will operate at reduced rates.

A 14 year old, David Tynan, son of Reverend Douglas Tynan, died after touching an electrical connection near an above ground pool filter at his home in Poughkeepsie. Police report the incident occurred Thursday.
South Korean forces trapped a North Korean spy boat off Huksan Island and sank it after a six hour pursuit. Fifteen North Korean crew members were killed, with two bodies recovered and no South Korean casualties. The agent Kim Yong ki was captured May 30 and used to lure the vessel.
Washington AP reports the government filed a civil anti trust action against U S Steel Corp alleging use of reciprocal purchase arrangements to monopolize sales of steel and steel products.
Chancellor Kiesinger will postpone his Washington trip from July to August due to the Apollo 11 moon flight. Government sources said the request to delay came from Washington.

A British Royal Navy submarine the Rorqual bumped a U S Navy minesweeper the USS Endurance while docking at Subic Bay Philippines. The Endurance sustained a three foot diameter hole in its wooden hull with no injuries reported.
A 25 year old from Wyoming Michigan was arraigned on murder charges in the death of 38 year old secretary Donna Vicemary Gehring whose partially clothed body was found in a grassy field south of Grand Rapids. William Moritz faces a single murder count as the investigation continues.
In Santa Monica the two year marriage of singer Eddie Fisher and Connie Stevens ends in divorce. They revealed in court the location and date of their marriage for the first time.
A 12 year old boy, Raymond Ethridge, slipped from a slowly moving freight train and was dragged under its wheels in Buffalo New York. One leg was severed and the other removed during surgery at Emergency Hospital. A court order was needed to authorize blood transfusions for the boy.
Apollo 11 crew Neil Armstrong Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins face an intensive training period ahead of a July 16 launch. Armstrong aims to touch down on July 21 with Aldrin 27 minutes later as mission simulations run long hours and officials stress readiness.
