Water needs measured with leaf pin sensor at UC Davis
Researchers at the University of California Davis devised an electronic recording method to detect when plants require water. They float a tiny electrically actuated pin on a leaf surface to track thickness changes as cells fill or shed water, recording the results on a line graph. Irrigation expert D. W. Henderson notes soil moisture indicators can mislead under heat or wind.
