Sen Edward M Kennedy considers quitting the U S Senate if Massachusetts voters doubt his fitness following a car crash that killed a young blonde passenger on a lonely island road. He defended himself on television denying intoxication and recalled narrowly surviving the wreck and a long swim to safety.
Washington reports a divided response to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy after his televised explanation of the Mary Jo Kopechne death. Democrats praised the speech while Republicans stayed silent. Kennedy admitted the failure to report the accident was indefensible and said he was confused and tired.
An Air Algerie Caravelle jetliner crashed near Biskra in southern Algeria killing 35. Two survivors were reported by Algerie Presse Service. The aircraft carried 30 European oilmen and seven crew, with most passengers French. The crash occurred around 1 30 a m amid clear weather and no terrain hazards.
Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong Aldrin and Collins remain in a quarantine van aboard the USS Hornet bound for Hawaii after Earthbound crew members in Houston report dust from the moon pack exposure. The van transfers to Hickam AFB for a Houston flight. doctors say the trio are in excellent condition with repaired ear infection.
British Prime Minister Harold Wilson told David Frost that if President Johnson had waited 48 hours in 1967 before resuming bombing after Tet a plan to end the war might have survived. Wilson noted Johnson was briefed on London talks with Kosygin when the bombing resumed and called the pause a missed chance to rebuild confidence.

Judge Roy Hofheinz announced that construction will begin Monday on a 2 million square foot ballroom near the Astroworld Hotel in the Astro domain. The facility, intended as the largest of its kind in the Southwest, will seat 3 000 for meetings and 2 000 for dinners, with a planned January 1970 opening.

A gasoline tanker in a National Guard convoy was struck by a passing tractor-trailer near Kingston New York causing a blaze that halted traffic on the State Thruway for over two hours. The tanker carried more than 1500 gallons plus 506 gallons in cans. No one was injured. The driver Antonio Verrone guided the tanker off the highway before flames spread. The other driver, Harry DeLong, received a $10 fine for unsafe passing.
