The five story high cake, 42 feet wide at the base, billed as the world’s largest cake, was completed and filled on display at Memorial Hall in Philadelphia. Baked by Sara Lee Kitchens as a national birthday dessert for Sunday.

An explosion in Seabrook New Hampshire damaged a post office less than a day after three Boston area bombings. Authorities said the blast was caused by a bomb but there were no injuries.
The Panama registered freighter New Venture, about 10,000 tons, reportedly sank off Northern Luzon on Wednesday. Ten crewmen are Taiwanese with search led by Japanese assets, an American plane a destroyer and Taiwan helicopters. No survivors reported. a life raft sighting was followed by a typhoon that ended the search briefly.
