In a soft Georgia accent and simple constitutional oath, Jimmy Carter takes office to lead the nation into its third century. He and outgoing President Gerald Ford rode together down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol in a moment of peaceful power transition.
A deep cold wave grips the eastern two thirds of the nation disrupting generating plants gas pipelines and water traffic. Hundreds of thousands stay home as factories and schools close oranges freeze in Florida and the Mississippi River stretch is officially closed stranding barges carrying fuel. Temperatures set record lows in Miami West Palm Beach and other cities and the citrus crop faces major damage officials warn conserve energy and prevent outages as utilities urge limits on usage.

The Ukola was sailing from the Dominican Republic to Jamaica when it encountered 12 foot seas and 35 knot winds.
