A gas drilling rig 85 miles south of the area experienced a blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. Rescue teams towed more than 40 men to safety and seven were injured in the incident.
Gary Mark Gilmore, the 36 year old killer of a Provo motel clerk, was executed by firing squad in Utah moments after a federal appeals court lifted a stay at 7:35 a.m. MST. He declined to stand for execution and died at 8:06 a.m. MST. His lawyer and uncle spoke of his complex final moments and wishes.
A U S Navy launch carrying sailors and Marines collided with a freighter in Barcelona harbor and flipped over. Twenty sailors were killed, nineteen others hospitalized with injuries and drowning symptoms. Tugboats righted the overturned craft and crews searched for more trapped personnel. Identities pending next of kin.
Andrew D. Lee, 25, of Palos Verdes Estates, and Christ J. Boyce, 23, of Rancho Palos Verdes, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit espionage for the Soviet Union. FBI says there is no estimate of the damage to U.S. rocket program as of Sunday.
Washington reports Ford will defer to President-elect Carter on preserving about 10,000 domestic shoe jobs at potential annual cost of around 170 million dollars. aides say time is too short for Ford to decide on raising tariffs. Seidman notes it's unlikely Ford acts. tariff relief was rejected last February.
Buffalo Raceway canceled tonight’s harness racing program as a snow storm and strong winds closed roads in the Buffalo area. A spokesman said racing would resume Tuesday night. Albany Mayor Erastus Corning II plans to seek a tenth term this fall, possibly facing State Sen. Howard Nolan if he runs.
Terence Cardinal Cooke called for a constitutional amendment against abortion saying over one million U S children have been killed by abortion. The Archbishop of New York urged opposition to Medicaid funding for abortions in a letter read at Sunday masses.
Theodore C. Sorensen told the Senate Intelligence Committee he asked President-elect Jimmy Carter to withdraw his nomination to lead the CIA. Committee Chair Daniel Inouye indicated the panel would honor Sorensen's request and he would step aside. Sorensen said he was qualified and rejected unfounded personal attacks.
Former British prime minister Anthony Eden was buried today beneath a beech tree on his Wiltshire country estate. Eden, who served as foreign secretary during World War II and led Britain during the 1956 Suez Crisis, died Friday aged 79 after illness while vacationing in Florida.

Officials report eight inches more for the month, 56.7 inches in Oswego city and a season total of 128.6 inches while schools remain closed and roads stay slick.
