The Saturday Evening Post will cease publication after 1821 founded American era, ending its long run as a national weekly magazine. The move marks a historic closure for a publication long tied to American literary and cultural life.
President elect Nixon asks Ray C. Bliss to remain chairman of the Republican National Committee for a substantial period. Bliss, 61, has led the party since 1965 and said he is satisfied with the job. Some aides had pressed for a more public political salesman, with talks of a separate spokesman role now dropped.
Six teenagers were killed in a late Friday night crash on Interstate 35 south of Guthrie Oklahoma. The burnt auto carried a Kansas license plate, remains unidentified, with four boys and two girls among the victims. The truck driver was only slightly injured.
An American squad of 11, including nine GIs and two Tiger Scouts, was overrun 30 miles southwest of Saigon. Six Americans and one scout were killed, the rest wounded. Reinforcements arrived too late to save the unit amid a broader wave of overnight Viet Cong attacks across the Mekong Delta.

The St. Regis Mohawk Indians plan a UN delegation to gain support against Canadian duties on goods bought in the United States. The protest centers on the 1794 Jay Treaty allowing free passage, which Canada says it has not ratified. About 6,000 Mohawks live on both sides of the border, with 47 arrested in a bridge blockage at Cornwall Ontario.
Syracuse New York AP reports Frank Piskor has been promoted to vice chancellor and provost of Syracuse University. Chancellor Tolley says Piskor will keep his roles as dean of the graduate school and as a faculty member while being replaced as vice president of academic affairs.
At Brandeis University in Waltham Mass 56 students occupy a building housing the switchboard and a computer as faculty vote 153 to 47 to establish an Afro American studies department. Swarthmore College sees 15 Afro American Student Society members keep hold of the administration building until concessions are won. Columbia trustees face a conservative court suit from 12 students claiming radical unrest stems from trustee failures to protect nonradical students.
Police hunt an avid hamburger eater who burglarized a diner in Albany taking 351 pounds of hamburger plus onions 20 pounds of haddock and 30 cartons of milk. The incident occurred Friday and involved entry to the diner's premises by the thief.
Thoma F P Dowd an 18 year old college student faced dis orderly conduct and resisting arrest after a disturbance outside a nurses residence in Buffalo AP. A judge dismissed the charges after Dowd explained he was serenading the nurses rather than hollering.
U S Army Chief of Staff General William C Westmoreland flew into Western Berlin unannounced to inspect the American garrison and meet the U S commandant amid East German surround. Officials kept the 24 hour trip quiet fearing student protests against the former Vietnam commander.
Israeli warplanes pounded Arab commando positions after an attack on an Israeli army vehicle. Across the border flames and smoke rose from the abandoned Arab village of Ktes near Kibbutz Gesher six miles south of the Jordan River in the Jordan valley.

WOR radio sub pilot Frank McDermott, 37, died when his two seat Bell 4762 helicopter crashed into a three story Queens apartment building during a live traffic report. One resident suffered a minor injury and a dozen residents evacuated as fire spread to a neighboring building.
