Washington AP reporting Ford weighs a plan to send government checks to all U.S. taxpayers to jolt demand and ease a deepening recession. Include an estimated 70 to 140 per person, total 15 to 30 billion dollars, with debate on feasibility.
Oswego High School Band Parents Organization met January 8 with 65 in attendance. President Fred Lockwood presented a letter of appreciation to acting principal Fred Maxon, and Edward Lisk outlined five field band trophies and the Mexico City invitation for the Marching Buccaneers. Due to rising costs, inflation, and local unemployment, the executive committee recommended abandoning the trip and planning a shorter visit as a possibility, a decision discussed at length.
The 60,000 member Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers union reached a two year agreement with Gulf Oil Corp. covering 14 refineries and 3,350 workers after a threatened Thursday walkout. The deal provides wage increases of 75 cents now, 4 percent in 1975, and 8 percent in 1976 plus a cost of living reopener and extra holidays and improved health and pension contributions. The Port Arthur, Texas local walkout over expired contract issues preceded national approval. Grospiron said the package is non inflationary and will guide future talks. Earlier, Gov Ella Grasso ordered sale of the former governor’s state plane due to budget concerns.
AP reports two crashes raise 23 fatalities in Whittier California and Newport News Virginia. A Cessna 150 collided with a Golden West airliner over Whittier injuring no ground victims. Ground damage included a house roof and a child’s room.
National Transportation Safety Board says a high order explosive detonated in the air cargo of a TWA flight from Tel Aviv to New York, crashing off the Ionian Sea on September 8 1974. Seventeen Americans among the dead. Earlier flight in area had a malfunctioning cargo bomb found in a suitcase. No Athens baggage checks, TWA now reviews loading procedures. Separately Hubert Humphrey announces refusal to run the 1976 presidential primary route in Minnesota.
Ford administration official says CIA told Justice Department it destroyed 9 000 to 10 000 political dissidents lists. CIA reportedly kept a separate count and did not use 1970 domestic intelligence data. officials cite March destruction amid spate of antiwar spying allegations. Leonard says lists aimed to track foreign travel by domestic disturbance leaders.
Niagara Mohawk gas crews in Oswego Fulton and Pulaski Districts logged 20 years with no lost time accidents and more than 2 000 000 manhours of safe work. Oswego safety director Henry Davis credits planning and cooperation. Readout lists crews and absent members.
