President Ford urged an immediate cease-fire in Angola and a government of national unity to halt the civil war. He warned the Soviet Union of possible damage to broader relations if it continues intervention and rejected using grain sales to influence Moscow.

Two Filipino gunmen seized a JAL DC8 at Manila airport holding eight crew and two male passengers as negotiations continued. Officials said 219 aboard included 104 transit travelers from Bangkok and 95 from Manila with one infant. The hijackers sought free passage out of the country and released a heart condition passenger before final surrender negotiations.
