Venezuela nationalizes its oil sector the world’s fifth largest, taking over 30 private concessions including U S entities. Twelve million citizens weigh benefits and risks as 14 state firms run operations under Petroleos de Venezuela while foreign companies contract to sell most production and provide tech aid.
Vatican officials denied reports that Pope Paul VI would pause work for a week or two after a strenuous Christmas week. The 78 year old pontiff, said to suffer arthrosis, appeared tired at New Year's Day address and met with close aides including Jean Cardinal Villot who received the new Vatican yearbook.

About 600 spectators watched from 250 cars at Oswego’s South Athletic Field as fireworks opened the Bicentennial amid bitter winds. Mayor Lazarek and Mayor-Elect Fitzgibbons led the event with remarks by local historians and civic leaders. The MicKinkle Fireworks Co. fired 230 rounds and a 150 shot finale as crowds honked in celebration at midnight.
At Oswego City Hall on New Year Day Mayor John Edward Fitzgibbons began his term before 300 attendees. A Fort Ontario guard collapsed during the mayor’s address and was treated at Oswego Hospital. City Historian Rosemary Nesbitt announced a bell ceremony by Anthony Leotta who manually rang City Hall bell with ear protection.
The U S Treasury began distributing 1.88 million dollars in public campaign funds to 11 presidential candidates led by Lloyd Bentsen who received 492 029 84 dollars. Other initial recipients include Ronald Reagan and George Wallace with 100 000 dollar starts and 374 422 for the President.
