Albany leaders signal quick approval of a bipartisan redistricting plan that preserves the current party balance 26–15 while updating lines in New York City Long Island and Westchester. Gov Rockefeller also proposes auto repair shop licensing.
Eastman Kodak Co. posted record worldwide sales of 2.4 billion and earnings of 352 million for 1967, an 11 percent rise in sales from 1966. Earnings were 4.37 per share, up seven cents, with worldwide totals adopted after 30 years. The year saw 715 million in working capital and a 200 million plus 52 million outlay on plants abroad. Dividends totaled 169 million for 81 million shares outstanding, amounting to 1.60 and 0.50 per share.
North Vietnamese troops ambushed a U S Marine patrol 800 yards outside Khe Sanh combat base. A second platoon suffered casualties. Military leaders warned of a possible large scale ground assault. Air bombers and napalm were used to cover Marines retreat into the base. Casualties were heavy but not disclosed.
A 746 foot Japanese ship carrying 51 806 tons of ore was freed from Gaillard Cut in the Panama Canal. Salvage crews pumped air into ballast tanks as tugs pulled the vessel to an open section, easing a blockage that held up over 60 ships. One lock lane is overhauled, keeping traffic slow despite removal.
In Tallahassee a walkout reaches week two with about 24 000 of Florida 55 000 teachers absent and University of Florida students planning to boycott classes march and rally. Legislative leaders meet education officials but call talks pointless asserting negotiations occur at the polls.
San Francisco strikes ended as 15 unions approve three year contracts. About 3000 workers were idled at the Chronicle and Examiner after a 53 day shutdown. The two papers are produced by the San Francisco Printing Co.
In Nicosia Cyprus President Makarios was re elected by a large margin as about 94 percent of registered Greek Cypriot voters participated in the Sunday election the leader since independence from Britain in 1960.
The National Center for Health Statistics reports 17.9 live births per 1,000 population in 1967, the lowest rate on record. The previous lows occurred in 1933, 1936, and again in 1966 amid economic concerns and rising costs of raising children.
FBI aided Avon police in probing the death of 42 year old government scientist Samuel Hammons Jr. after an explosion in a package he received at the Greyhound terminal in Cleveland. He died during surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lorain about six hours later at 11 30 p.m. Saturday.
The House-Senate Atomic Energy Committee urged a Pentagon speed-up in nuclear powered ship development. The report cites the need for immediate and major improvement in the nuclear submarine program to counter the rapidly increasing Soviet submarine threat.
London police speculated the 140000 pounds theft from a Paddington sorting room may be an inside job. Detectives search Britain for clues as the gang allegedly knew the security setup after the Great Train Robbery era.
Gen William Westmoreland said more American troops probably will be required in Vietnam, arguing that additional forces could deny the enemy objectives and build deterring momentum. He did not specify numbers, noting 525,000 already authorized.
Sen. J. W. Fulbright calls for a full scale congressional debate if the United States escalates in Vietnam, arguing that dispatching more troops would be disastrous and urging a reexamination of U.S. aims. He cites Tonkin and the 1964 bombing campaign as justification for caution.

Saigon reports a broad new directive from Gen Westmoreland's HQ to withhold certain military details from the press. Brig. Gen Sidle will brief reporters soon on the directive aimed at denying intelligence information to the enemy, affecting casualty figures base attacks and other sensitive data.
