A former IRA commander James Bryson escapes custody after a courthouse trial. Police pursuit launched as investigators confirm he fled the building and vanished from view while under escort, triggering a manhunt and security review.
Four workmen were injured when a six inch high pressure natural gas main exploded at a construction site in Saratoga Springs New York. One initially reported killed but later confirmed accounted for. Three workers pulled from the mound by a supervisor. One seriously burned was taken to Albany Medical Center about 30 miles away. Firefighters remained at the scene for hours to protect nearby homes.
Saigon reports President Nguyen Van Thieu urged immediate elections to prevent millions from the North influencing votes. He said talks with North Vietnam should start toward normalization and eventual reunification. An allied Libyan airliner shooting killed 106, including American businessman Wladyslaw Borysoglebski, a Polish-born Chicago resident and U.S. citizen. In Miami Beach, the Cost of Living Council advisory committee meets amid the largest monthly food price rise in 15 years, with AFL CIO President Meany watching to gauge continued cooperation with Phase 3 controls.
Federal auditors urged stronger controls on canned and frozen fruits and vegetables after finding about 39 million pounds failing U.S. grade standards in 132 AMS plants during 1970 and the first quarter of 1971.

Leeds University in England announced it has withdrawn an offer of an honorary degree to American Nobel Prize winning scientist Prof William Shockley, a developer of the transistor. Shockley’s belief that blacks are generally genetically inferior to whites had already caused controversy. the offer was made three months ago.
A series of blasts along a liquid petroleum pipeline near Austin, Texas, killed four people in vehicles on a nearby road and injured four others. Flames shot hundreds of feet into the air as two cars and a truck were destroyed. A Phillips Petroleum pump plant leakage is suspected and authorities searched for more victims as helicopters prepared to evacuate severely burned patients.
In a North Country tragedy, a nine month old infant girl, Wanda Scott, died of smoke inhalation and burns after a fire started by a defective electrical extension cord to an aquarium. Her mother tried to rescue her but fled with two older children and could not reach the baby.
Washington AP reports President Nixon is weighing asking Congress for near blank-check authority in upcoming world trade talks. He may seek power to impose quotas and raise tariffs unilaterally and to eliminate need for congressional approval for any agreement. The plan also contemplates extending most-favored-nation status to the Soviet Union and other nations in tariff matters. Currently the president cannot unilaterally impose quotas and can only reduce tariffs.
AP reports Premier Souvanna Phouma says Laos may urge renewed U S air strikes if North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao again violate the two day cease fire. He cites 29 major violations and says most are by foreign troops as government forces retreat from Paksong.
A market dealer notes the dollar held near 2.8600 per unit, rising from the earlier 2.8350 parity level as trading remained cautious through mid morning.

Larry McCrary 32 and his wife, mother, uncle and four children from Kingsport Tennessee were rescued by the Coast Guard after two days adrift in a 19 foot open boat swept 75 miles by Gulf Stream.
