President Nixon disclosed in the State of the Union address that he will recommend a tax reform bill to Congress and proposals to ease the property tax burden on older Americans. He dispelled doubts that he would present his own tax reform legislation.

The 5.5 magnitude tremor is reported by UPI with no additional tax reform details from the administration. Palm Springs California AP Winthrop Rockefeller former Arkansas governor and son of John D Rockefeller Jr died at Desert Hospital after a chest ailment. He was admitted a week earlier. immediate cause of death not released.
The Senate approved a bill funding antihijack police at U S airports with 35 million dollars annually. It heads to the House where a similar measure failed last year. The president would gain power to suspend airline service with nations harboring hijackers.
Washington reports the largest monthly food price increase in a generation with January food costs up 2.1 percent overall and groceries up 2.5 percent. Clothing and used cars offset the rise keeping the overall cost of living up 0.3 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

United States and China will establish official liaison offices in Washington and Peking to speed normalization of relations. Henry Kissinger said the offices will handle trade and related matters with full diplomatic privileges but not imply full diplomatic ties.
