In Montevideo the Tupamaros freed Brazilian Consul Aloysio Mares Dias Gomide after seven months in captivity. He and his wife flew to Brazil while U S. and British captives remain. ransom reports surface regarding Dr Claude Fly and Geoffrey Jackson case. Police say Dias Gomide was kept in four places. crowd cheers from a sixth floor balcony.
In London AP reports that D H Lawrence tops a survey of 1000 British university-bound pupils aged 16 to 18 for favorite writer. Ian Fleming's James Bond ranks second, while Shakespeare Chaucer and Dickens trail. Findings appeared in Educational Research.
The Defense Department and the FCC will review the governments nuclear attack warning system after a weekend malfunction. NORAD faced a tape error Saturday causing a no broadcast alert and Sunday experienced a control failure on AP lines. White House requested an investigation into Saturday's false alert and pledged accountability.
The Associated Press reports cloudy skies across New York State with light precipitation in western areas as a strong winter storm approaches. Temperatures are in the 20s to 30s with brief sun, and the National Weather Service forecasts the storm moving northeast from the middle Mississippi Valley.
A car carrying five teenagers crashed into the rear of a tractor trailer on Interstate 81 south of Binghamton, killing two youths and injuring three. An all white jury in Darlington County convicts Jeryl Best 42 Delmer Kirwen 46 and James March 32 all of Yarrington County of rioting tied to attacks on school buses carrying Negro children to desegregated facilities last year. The seven women five men jury began deliberating Saturday afternoon.
