AP reports a three-jet Soviet airliner crashed during landing at Prague Ruzyne Airport. Western sources say 77 of 99 aboard died with 22 survivors. CTK confirmed the accident and noted some crew and passengers survived. Witnesses described the aircraft catching fire and disintegrating after impact.
Charles Stewart Mott, 97, a Flint industrialist and longtime GM director, helped shape General Motors into a global giant and founded a major charitable foundation. He gave away over 130 million dollars and left a foundation worth about 400 million. Funeral services are planned for Wednesday at St. Pauls Episcopal Church.

Fire Chief John T. O'Hagan attributed the Staten Island gas storage tank explosion that killed 40 men on February 10 to gas trapped in polyurethane insulation igniting from a spark of undetermined origin. He doubted this insulation type would be permitted again in similar tanks and noted a less flammable alternative was unavailable.
