Proud Marine Well Trained Hit by Sniper

Cpl. Thomas J. Bain 21, a Marine corporal who wrote to his parents that he was proud to fight for his country, was wounded in Vietnam 16 days after arrival. He was hit in the right thigh and sent to Yokosuka Naval Hospital in Japan. His parents live on 201 13th St.

Fire drives county humane home children to Hotel Van Curler

Nineteen children from the Schenectady County Humane Society fled a Friday night blaze and found shelter at the Hotel Van Curler. Four more children were taken to private homes. Fire officials cited water and smoke damage to the brick building and suspected a linen closet as the origin. No injuries were reported.

Big Ben Fails To Strike On Friday Evenings

London AP reports Big Ben paused at 10 and 11 p.m. on Friday night not striking the hour, then resumed at midnight after engineers from the bell's maker fixed a loose shackle pin in the mechanism. A spokesman attributed the fault to a mechanical hitch and said normal operation returned.
