Alexander F. Jones, 74, retired executive editor of the Syracuse Herald Journal and former Washington Post managing editor, died Tuesday night in a Orlando hospital. His 53-year newspaper career ended last April due to ill health. Born in Wisconsin Rapids, he started as a cub reporter in 1912 at the Wisconsin State Journal. He led the American Society of Newspaper Editors as president in 1951, and from 1935 to 1947 was Washington Post managing editor before becoming assistant to the publisher.
