U S war planes raided the Haiphong area for the first time in a month signaling a shift from bombing restraint as peace talks stalled after the Viet Cong launched a major offensive Jan 30. US and South Vietnamese forces reported gains in Hue and Saigon while casualties mounted.
Orangeburg imposed a dusk to dawn curfew as about 2,600 students from South Carolina State College and Claflin College left town amid clashes over a bowling alley integration. No injuries reported Friday night after a week of violence that left three students dead and 37 wounded on prior nights. Police and National Guard maintained streets and several businesses remained closed until dawn.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller urged a permanent resolution to the sanitation strike amid a growing pileup of 80 000 tons of refuse. He warned of National Guard deployment if needed and criticized Mayor Lindsay for a breach of stance while new talks sought a settlement.
A twin engine Piper Aztec owned by Command Airways crashed after takeoff from Dutchess County Airport en route to Burlington Vermont. Pilot Matthew ONeill 31. Passengers Richard Jenkins 29 and Harry Silon 24 died at Vassar Brothers Hospital. Car occupants had minor injuries. Engine failure cited.
The Pentagon urged congressmen to postpone Vietnam visits until after the Viet Cong city offensive, while entertainers may travel. Rep. Jerome Waldie postponed his trip at the Pentagon's request. Sebastian Cabot and other entertainers were still cleared to travel to entertain U.S. service members with escorts arranged but no disruption to military plans.
Twenty four people were rescued from two lifeboats and a life raft in the stormy Atlantic after abandoning the 313-foot Charny 550 miles off Cape Hatteras. The Charny crew including 22 aboard plus two passengers were taken to the nearby Norwegian freighter Vinni in good condition aboard an Absecon Coast Guard cutter.
Palmyra officials were puzzled when a New York City illegal parking ticket arrived in November bearing the village road grader’s license plate number. Village Attorney Henry Nesbitt said he would write a letter to correct the mix up.
Army Cpl. William M. Sebast, 22, a State Ranger School graduate from Colonie, New York, died of wounds received in South Vietnam. Sebast, a military policeman, was wounded on January 31 while on guard duty, the Defense Department reported Friday.
Harold R. Little, a State Department service officer attached to the Agency for International Development, was killed Thursday during the Communist assault on Hue, Vietnam. A Harvard 1960 graduate and former Bausch & Lomb employee, he had been in Vietnam since last November working on a pacification program at the University of Hue.
Vientiane report says North Vietnamese troops plan to strike the south Laotian town of Saravane about 60 miles west of South Vietnam near the Ho Chi Minh trail. The defector 2nd Lt. Nguyen Van Than told reporters the attack is set for Monday and about 1,800 enemy troops are in position.
U S customs agents seized 22 pounds of heroin worth about 10 million dollars at O'Hare International Airport on a Friday night. The seizure involved two women from Spain and a man from France and marked the largest heroin find in Chicago history.
Fifteen people were arrested in two Ulster County raids on Friday night, six of them girls. Ages ranged from 19 to 22. Most face marijuana possession and loitering charges, with one charged for possession of dangerous drugs.
In Lackawanna New York police brutality charges were filed after a series of inter racial fights forced the sudden closure of Lackawanna Senior High School. Four pupils were injured and five suspended.
Phnom Penh reports Prince Norodom Sihanouk thanks Phan Van Dong for sending a pistol captured from a downed American pilot. The gift underscores ongoing wartime exchange between Cambodia and North Vietnam during the conflict.
Michigan Governor George Romney charges Richard Nixon has not offered a Vietnam peace plan and urges one. Nixon counters peace requires sustained military pressure. Romney promotes a guaranteed neutralization of Vietnam Laos and Cambodia backed by US Soviet interests to keep China out of Southeast Asia.
Dr. Robert D. Larsson acting president and dean of Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica was chosen president. He succeeds Rt. Rev. Walter M. Higley of Syracuse as presiding bishop of the Central New York Diocese. Other officers include Rev. Edler Hawkins and Thomas Lamont as vice presidents and Frederick Nichols as treasurer. About 100 delegates attended the two day meeting. Delegates affiliated the Christian Science Church of New York State.

Speculation says dead and injured crewmen’s fate may be settled while Seoul weighs reclaiming operational control of Korea’s 600,000 strong armed forces. Foreign Minister Choi cites security arrangements over a $100 million fund President Johnson seeks.
An ISC plane returned to Vientiane from Hanoi Friday night without the three captured U S airmen. U S Ambassador William Sullivan waited at the airport on hopes of a prisoner swap, naming Capt. John David Black of Johnson City Tenn Maj Norris Miller Overly of Huntington W Va and Ens David Paul Matheny of Indiana as the missing men.
Albany New York a record 2.28 million dollars in license fees were paid by dog owners in 1967 as the number of dogs in the state excluding New York City rose to 954 038 the highest total on record. The State Agriculture Department said registrations 31 276 higher than in 1966.
