Thousands in Londonderry attend a candlelight mass for 13 victims of Sunday's clash with British paratroops amid high security. Rioters in Dublin protest new killings, while Catholic areas in Northern Ireland observe strikes and closures.
At Attica prison officials granted inmate Peter Butler permission to correspond with and receive visits from his fiancee Dorothy Thorne a secretary in lawyer William Kunstler's New York City office. State attorneys had opposed broader privileges arguing rules limit visits to immediate family.
New York state attorney general Louis J. Lefkowitz urged restrictions on the number size and kinds of motor vehicles and a ban on planned obsolescence. He also proposed a strong environmental policy act with pollution proof and impact studies. An inventory and surveys of natural resources air and water were urged ahead of plan completion.
Tampa program aims to steer 14 to 18 year olds away from drugs by placing delinquents and dropouts into a nine month course aboard a renovated ship. Participants learn seamanship, water testing, and related trades while traveling to nearby islands. President Nixon urged Congress to halt the 112 day West Coast dock strike and enact permanent limits on crippling transportation strikes. He said the stoppage has cost more than $600 million in stranded exports including farm products and other goods.
New York AP report says Bronx District Attorney Burton B. Roberts announced an interim arrangement with the State Department of Motor Vehicles to prosecute those who fail to answer summonses for moving traffic violations. The plan would have the Administrative Adjudication Bureau refer scofflaw names to Criminal Court for prosecution.
