In Bonn, Chancellor Willy Brandt failed to win a test-of-strength budget vote as the Bundestag deadlocked 247 to 247 with one abstention. The tie underscored no clear majority for Brandt or the Christian Democrats, raising the prospect of general elections.
Rich ard G. Kleindienst clears a major hurdle by winning a Judiciary Committee vote to forward his attorney general nomination to the full Senate. The panel, 11-4, reconfirmed the nomination after a two month probe into ITT antitrust settlement improprieties, while liberal Democrats vow to oppose on the floor.
A federal jury found five members of The Buffalo guilty on two charges for a raid inside a closed federal building. They were acquitted on a third charge of illegal possession of government records. The verdict followed a seven-hour deliberation.
After Edmund Muskie quits active campaigning McGovern secures new backers. Sen. Fred Harris and Iowa Democratic chair Cliff Larson switch to McGovern, with Larson keeping the option to return to Muskie depending on developments.
Four North Vietnamese divisions spearhead a tank guided assault through the northern defense line of South Vietnam overrunning Dong Ha and driving toward Quang Tri. U.S. air and naval power countered with heavy strikes as 7th Fleet ships fired thousands of rounds. a Cobra helicopter crew lost two members in the battle.
Calm weather prevailed across the United States with minimal extremes. The East enjoyed clear skies and light winds, New England saw overnight chill, while the Mississippi Valley and Great Plains faced cloudiness and light to moderate showers. Far West stayed clear though Pacific Coast showers began. temperatures ranged from 23 at Flagstaff to 74 at Key West.
Apollo 16 crew John Young Charles Duke and Thomas Mattingly returned to Hawaii aboard the USS Ticonderoga after a 11 day mission ending with a splashdown in the South Pacific. They will travel to the Manned Spacecraft Center where rock samples from Descartes Mountains await analysis.
Ronald Brockmann, a restaurant owner in Penfield, won a $50 000 prize after the tickets he buys weekly from a Webster restaurant were saved by the owner. Brockmann had forgotten the tickets but they were discovered and turned into the grand winner.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy criticized President Nixon's Vietnam war and economy while stating he has no plans to seek the Democratic nomination. He told over 1,000 AFL-CIO United Steelworkers members that they want a president who works with all people, not just the board.
Cornell University President Dale R. Carson met with protesters occupying Carpenter Hall but stated he was there to discuss not negotiate. A university spokesman said no further meetings were scheduled at dawn.
Albany report urges women gain leadership and equal pay in education. Regents faulted the system and called for action, noting only one woman on the 15 member body. In Batavia a bus rear-ended a stepped trailer truck injuring two students and shaking 13. driver Matthew T. O'Brien, 58, was charged with driving while intoxicated.
Joseph W. Guerin 24 of Bridgeport Conn pleaded guilty to murdering Albany Police Sgt Michael McNeil who was shot on November 29. Judge Martin Schenck scheduled sentencing for May 15. Guerin faces 15 years to life.
The Senate approved a bill to require timely corrections of credit card and charge account billing errors by a 51 to 15 vote, sending it to the House. Consumer advocates in the House reportedly were unimpressed and not ready to push the measure this session.
Niagara Mohawk Power Corp reports consolidated net income of 24.794 million for the quarter ended March 31, up from 19.8 million a year earlier. Earnings are 8 cents a share versus 5 cents, as shares outstanding increased. Operating revenues rise from 169.2 million to 183 million.
A Sullivan County couple learned from an Army spokesman that their son, Spec. 4 David Stover, 19, was killed in a helicopter crash and burn during a combat mission in Vietnam on April 18. The Stovers of Brown Road, Wallkill Township, were notified Thursday by Army officials at West Point.
