Chicago AP reports millions of cicadas will emerge after 17 years underground for a brief, thunderous season. Field Museum curator Henry Dybas notes cicadas feed on tree sap, cause limited bark damage, and align their emergence with remarkable precision, with 13 year and other periods in the South excepted.
Cambodian insurgents control a long stretch of the east bank opposite Phnom Penh after overruning weak government positions along the Mekong. A 47 year old Rayfus Gambrell confronted a would be holdup man outside a Detroit location. Gambrell reportedly shoved wrestled him to the floor and hurled him through a plate glass window, ending the attempted robbery. Local authorities continue to investigate the incident.

An AP report from Lowville New York states that 1st Lt. Dean Davis 24 of Griffiss Air Force Base was killed when his F106 fighter trainer crashed into a wooded area about 10 miles east of Lowville. Davis assigned to the 49th Fighter Interceptor Squadron since January and was a Provo native.
AP reports Americans held at Son Tay will reunite in Texas with U S commandos who carried out the 1970 raid. About 59 of 66 prisoners and 74 of 85 raiders plan to attend with Perot funding travel and lodging. Meurer says Perot will not attend. the event honors both sides and aims for publicity.
Former Air Force major James Padgett, a 1956 UF civil engineering graduate, recalled not having time to join protests as about 100 demonstrators heckled him during a welcome ceremony attended by roughly 1,000. The Florida Alligator editor apologized for the demonstrators.
