RR Freight House Burns in Rutland
A general alarm fire in Rutland Vermont Monday night destroyed three floors of the railroads freight house. Much of the railroad records and furniture owned by president William S. Ginsburg were lost. Damage estimated at 50 000 to 75 000 with one third of the structure gone and half of the remaining interior charred. Two firemen were injured fighting the blaze.

It was placed there by Leon ami Walter Jerome, maternal grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill, who became an honorary U S citizen today. Jerome led a group 17 miles to New Brunswick in 1838 to haul the cannon to its resting place. The cannon had been used by the British and later taken by Gen. George Washington in the Princeton battle of January 3, 1777. Jerome, born in Palmyra New York in 1818, is listed as Princeton class of 1839 though he did not graduate. His daughter Jennie Jerome married Lord Randolph Churchill.
