The Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling blocking construction of the 789 mile trans Alaska oil pipeline. Justices did not comment or dissent. The decision leaves the project’s fate to Congress amid environmental and national security concerns. The Wilderness Society and four groups challenged the plan on environmental grounds.
In Buenos Aires a U S business executive and retired Rear Admiral Francisco Aleman were kidnapped by three terrorists. The executive was abducted while en route to the Kodak facility. Aleman was seized at his downtown apartment with his wife bound and gagged.
Commuters who normally ride PATH trains into Manhattan faced long lines on the first weekday of the walkout. Riders at Hoboken walked to buses, and in Newark Penn Station lines stretched as passengers queued for special shuttle trains to Manhattan.
An intercity bus and a truck collided head on near Ijuí outside Porto Alegre, sending the bus into a river. Nineteen people were killed and police reported the accident occurred near the border with Uruguay and Argentina.
Albany NY AP contract talks involving 3400 state troopers are likely to resume in Albany on Wednesday. Lanning Mosher, assistant director of the State Office of Employee Relations, said the earliest possible meeting date is Wednesday and a venue has yet to be chosen.
South Vietnam said it would boycott the Joint Military Commission until Communist forces end the five week siege of the Tong Le Chan ranger base, 50 miles north of Saigon. A military spokesman said Saigon proposed a joint team of majors and colonels to the encircled camp to resolve the issue and allow evacuation of government wounded.
Dr Thomas W Matthew neurosurgeon and black capitalism advocate, was to be arraigned in New York on a 121 count indictment accusing him and lawyer Sidney L Katz of diverting $250000 in Medicaid payments. The charges include grand larceny and conspiracy with alleged transfers to a Harlem real estate firm two apartment buildings and private bus lines in New York and Watts Los Angeles.
Sen. Sam J. Ervin Jr. rejected Nixon White House aides testifying in secret committee sessions. He affirmed the Senate's subpoena power and denied Dean III exemption. Ervin labeled Dean's role as attorney for aides a conflict of interest and urged proper legal procedures. He warned against elevating White House aides over the people.
Sweden will no longer automatically grant asylum to American military deserters as U S troops pull out of Vietnam. About 450 deserters and draft dodgers are in Sweden, with border controls to stop new arrivals. Exceptions may be made for special weighty reasons.
The United States government and AIM negotiators said a consensus had been reached on more than half of the 10 Indian demands in talks to end the 34 day occupation of Wounded Knee. Talks were to resume as the stakes remained high and actions by federal agencies and Congress loomed.

The meeting follows warnings that Communist violations of the cease fire could invite U S military reprisals. About 30 patrons were lined up against a wall and robbed at gunpoint at the G and J Social Club in Buffalo early Sunday. One victim, Ernest Kimball, 30, was shot in the chest as thieves with a machine gun, shotgun and pistol seized cash and jewelry, with reports of more than $1,000 per person. Police note prior raids but no convictions.
A Batavia woman, 44 year old Henrietta Koch, was killed early Sunday when the car she rode in on Interstate 490 crashed into a utility pole, deputies said. The crash occurred on the highway near Batavia.

Field reports say 50 soldiers killed and 80 wounded, with retreats toward Chambak as Communists press advance and two American armored personnel carriers are captured. The operation targets Mt Kirirom, with rebels entrenched atop the summit.
