Outagamie County tentatively extends the final deadline for closing its old airport to 48 hours after the Civil Aeronautics Board rules on North Central Airlines request to quit serving Appleton. County says CAB lacks authority. If ruling comes today, deadline may hold and lead to court action over CAB’s authority and North Central’s right to overfly Appleton.
Viet Cong attack on Dong Xoai left heavy casualties amid ruins and panicked civilians. Three Americans killed, 15 missing, 15 wounded reported. U S casualties climb as planes conduct 121 sorties. Viet Cong reportedly withdrawn by dawn. government and rebels suffer heavy losses.
A two car crash in Chippewa County early today killed Ralph Sylla 35 Thorp and left injuries. A separate rural collision ten miles north of Chippewa Falls killed Rudolph Emerson 85 former mayor and Eli Nelson 9 both of Chippewa Falls. Driver Harlow Berg 50 Dallas Wis was treated at hospital for observation. Wisconsin highway toll rose to 360 this year.
A century-old Victoria Hotel in Plainfield New Jersey burned early today. The blaze injured 18 people including a police officer, left two missing, and two bodies were recovered as fire crews fought the three story building near the business district. Patrolman Robert Miller rescued multiple residents before collapsing. 93-year-old Frances Van Horn survived in good condition. Firefighters extinguished the flames around 5 am after a 2:36 am alarm.
Wisconsin Democrats open a state convention led by Lt. Gov. Patrick J. Lucey as keynote speaker while David Carley of Madison seeks a 1966 gubernatorial bid. The gathering will elect seven at large admin committee members, choose a state treasurer, and two vice chairmen as attendance is projected around 1,500.
Donald Glsor, 35, recovering after being struck by an unidentified motorboat on Lake Madison. He was standing and fishing when the boat knocked him down, circled, and sped away, according to police statements.
Madison AP report details a six year political stalemate as the Wisconsin Assembly votes 32 46 against an 809.3 million budget tax measure, while the Senate had earlier approved a nine day effort 17 16. Gov Knowles blasts the move saying it risks fiscal chaos with the new fiscal period looming.
