Miss Minnie C. Mangum, a 52 year old aide to a savings association, faced a postponed embezzlement hearing as auditors search firm records for shortages possibly reaching one million dollars. Bail set at 25000, hearing rescheduled to February 7 after defense and prosecutor agreed to delay.
Josiah Marvel, 51, former U S ambassador to Denmark and longtime Democrat party chairman in Delaware, died last night at Delaware Hospital. He served as minister to Denmark in 1946 and was raised to ambassador in 1949, led the International Claims Commission from 1930 until ousted by President Eisenhower in 1953.
Lt Gen Randolph McCall Pate was sworn in as the 21st commandant of the Marine Corps at the Pentagon ceremony with Navy Secretary Charles S. Thomas presiding. Departing commandant Gen Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr, 59, steps down after four years, to become chairman of the Inter-American Defense Board. Pate has served as assistant commandant and chief of staff and now assumes four stars.
In Pennsylvania, peace and justice reign at home as Mrs Arthur Ross took an oath yesterday to serve as a justice of the peace, a role also once held by her husband in the Ross household.
Newly released Yalta documents show Soviet trickery as Russia pretended friendship with allies. Averell Harriman warned in 1945 of curbed cooperation and limited access for air and naval teams, while Molotov denied Chinese Communist aims in a State Department briefing.
Western diplomats said a study of the Bulganin Khrushchev tour of India Burma and Afghanistan shows Moscow will intensify Asian activity. The leaders’ speeches to the Supreme Soviet stressed anti colonialism and recognition of Communist China signaling a shift in policy and a potential mobilization of Asia against Western powers.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles warned that the Russians will do anything short of war to spread hatred and trouble in the coming year. He foresees no open aggression despite a vast Soviet arms buildup and says Moscow will try to exploit divisions among free world nations.
The first contingent of the new West German army will depart Düsseldorf on Sunday to train at U S bases. Four officers and enlisted men, up to lieutenant colonel, will fly on a German Lufthansa airliner and wear the Streit Kraefic uniform with full equipment.

It notes Britain has three capable types, while the United States lists nine and France six. France's Leduc 022 and four top U.S. planes reach 1320 mph, Britain’s fastest English Electric Pi around 1056 mph in its improved form.
The first class of 41 new officers trained under a program will more than triple the Wisconsin Traffic Patrol. The group, part of 180 to be trained, joins the 70 existing members within 18 months. Training begins next month at Camp McCoy after the 1955 Legislature authorized the expansion. Melvin O. Larson commended the recruits and noted the need for stronger highway traffic supervision statewide.
Waupun Wis. (UP) A fire destroyed the Leader News plant and damaged nearby apartments in zero weather. Estimated losses ranged from 100000 to 150000 with building damage around 73000 and plant equipment nearly as much. Fire Chief Papke described the blaze as completely destroying the printing plant and threatening the upstairs suites. Fireman Norman Lentz escaped serious injury after crashing through a second floor joist as flames spread. The Beaver Dam department assisted the early morning effort after the fire began in the furnace room at 439 am and rekindled hours later.
Violent gales battered France and Italy with widespread damage. Winds rushing to high speeds forced ships to shelter in port while chimneys toppled and store windows shattered along the Lacuran coast and inland damage disrupted communities.
Reports from Taipel Formosa say Chinese Communists bombard Natinoalist off shore islands and prepare possible assault on Matsu or Quemoy with air and naval activity. Skirmishes reported around Quemoy Kaoteng with several hundred shells. Predictions of an attack within a week or mid January while U S forces remain ready to intervene. Red air strength estimated near Formosa at up to two thousand planes with MiG model jets ready for action. General Davis calls the Red air threat real and notes bases could be manned quickly.
Washington senators and representatives on the Senate House Economic subcommittee urged caution on immediate tax cuts, warning a rate reduction next year could spark inflation amid a booming economy. The report favored gradual cuts over ten years and emphasized debt reduction during booms to offset recessions. Members Mills Douglas Goldwater and Curtis joined in outlining proposals and balancing the budget outlook.
In California, Joseph L. Richetti faced burglary charges after 27 400 nickels were found in his apartment. Felice booked him on suspicion of burglarizing a safe and stealing 200 pounds of coins the previous Friday.
Washington reports that Francis E. Walter of the House Un-American Activities Committee said it will call Robert M. Hutchins, director of the Ford Foundation funded Fund for the Republic, for public testimony on how the Communist Party is portrayed in the 1934 committee report and the fund’s stance on communism. The inquiry will precede other hearings, with Hutchins denying any soft stance on Communism.
