Viet Cong encircled and virtually destroyed an elite South Vietnamese ranger battalion near Tam Ky, 350 miles northeast of Saigon. The fight lasted about three hours with heavy casualties on Vietnamese and American advisers. two U.S. advisers were killed and four reported missing.
Washington AP reports Sen. Richard B. Russell chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee and opposes any scaling down of defenses against Soviet bombers while questioning a deep cut in the long range bomber fleet planned by 1971. He warned against abandoning the manned strategic bomber and urged remaining prepared for Russian attack. Continued on Page 16, Col. 8.
