Polk county wheat growers see high insurance losses this year
Polk county reports show 451 losses out of 479 all risk crop insurance policies on wheat seed planted in 1938, with 28 policy holders reporting no loss. Indemnity payments aid farmers by paying loans, bills, home improvements, and seed costs for 1940. Adjustments for 1939 crop nearly complete, with settlements due in weeks. Over 1,261 growers have filed 1940 crop insurance applications. premiums and applications due before seeding or by September 20.

William Arthur Michener born February 18 1867 in Cedar County Iowa died September 12 1939 in Omaha Nebraska aged 72 years 6 months and 25 days. He married Mina Messenger December 10 1890 and had six children Elmer O Stromsburg Wesley A Gresham N Lindley Indianapolis Mary Keebaugh Waco Elizabeth Peterson Stromsburg Bay Central City. Survived by one brother Walter Shelby 11 grandchildren and many relatives. He moved to Nebraska in 1880 lived Hinckberry precinct until 1936 then Osceola until death. Preceded by wife May 29 1938. Active in Wayland church and IOOF Lodge.

The Polk County W C T U met at Covenant Mission church in Stromsburg on September 13 with Mrs Haverland re-elected as president and officers Falk and Hendrickson continuing as secretary and treasurer. The program included musical items, devotions, a temperance address by Rev H J Plymesser, a memorial service for departed members, and a book review on Alcohol What It Is And What It Does. The banner prize went to Stromsburg Union for high standards, and Mrs Rasp of Gresham attended the sessions in place of the absent guest speaker.

The Nebraska statewide sorghum topping contest near York on October 3 will feature planting and harvest information, equipment demos, and a question box for sorghum production. Polk county farmers will vote next month to elect men to administer the Agricultural Conservation program. A September 19 Osceola meeting outlines early October balloting with five days notice for voting sites. About 2500 eligible voters may participate across precincts with three community committeemen per precinct plus alternates and county committee delegates.

Polk County Farmers Offered 12 Month Corn Loan Extension
Polk county farmers with 1937 and 1938 corn under government loan are being contacted about extending loans for 12 months. Extensions, with a storage allowance of seven cents per bushel, must be decided by October 1. About 90 percent are expected to extend, according to ACP committee member John M. Staroscik.
