Mormon Pioneers Blaze Trail Across Nebraska to Zion
The 1847 pioneer company led by Brigham Young set out from Winter Quarters across Nebraska to reach Salt Lake City. The voyage involved 143 men women and children, many wagons and oxen, buffalo hunts, hostile and friendly encounters with Indians, and the early Mormon post offices and distance-tracking devices. The trek shaped subsequent emigration routes and left Florence as a major outfitting stop before the handcart expeditions.
