The Nebraska Game Commission says Bobwhite quail will be legal game in northeast Nebraska for the first time in 45 years. Officials cite a growing population and a short ten percent harvest expectation for the opening season, with advice on hunting ethics and respect for landowners.
Robert L. Mills, referee, sold the Joseph Bernt land in Polk County. Rudolph Urban bought an improved 80 acre tract for 12 650 and an unimproved 40 for 5 025. Albin Prososki secured the other improved eighty for 8 560.

Distress Warrants rose to 243 from 178, with over one third already returned.
Polk County ASC announces new filing date for 1957 wheat acreage reserve agreements extended to October 5 1956 from September 21 1956. Approvals are first come first served. The Wheat Bank is the second of four soil bank programs. Farmers receive payment for reducing wheat acreage below allotments to offset lost income. Winter wheat growers should visit the county ASC office to sign an agreement.
The first sale takes place Tuesday September 18 at the Sanders farm near Silver Creek with ten milch cows 120 breeding ewes and farm machinery. Ford C Bond general sale next Wednesday September 26 with farm machinery. Buchannan sale Thursday September 27 features 14 Holstein cows and full equipment.

Mr and Mrs Hubert Girard announce a baby boy born September 10 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital weighing five pounds six ounces. Mr and Mrs Walter Beck announce a daughter Catherine Marie born September 5 at St Marys Hospital Columbus weighing eight pounds four ounces. Effie Fernandez reports a granddaughter Alita born August 7 in Addison Illinois to her son and daughter in law Sidney and wife. County Agent Mr Gary Garey and wife add a baby boy born September 11 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital weighing eight pounds twelve ounces. The Gareys have a second son and a daughter.
Polk, a 500 population town, plans a two day fifty year celebration on September 18 and 19 with 50 planned floats. Guest speakers include Congressman R D Harrison and James Wilson. Albert Sundberg will recount the town history. Local elder Pa Wayne Hill is 83 and Mrs H G Brauer 81. Events include kids parade, St Pauls Bugle Corps exhibition, dances, a boxing exhibition by Rodney Stevens’ sons, a water fight, band performances, best sunbonneted lady prize, antique exhibit, and prize drawings.

Osceola youths head to universities and colleges nationwide after 56 graduates. LeMoyne Monson and Marlin Nelson depart for Lincoln University business college, while Gregg Eklund also studies business administration there.
The Osceola Volunteer Fire Department petitions prompt a public hearing Tuesday September 18 at 2:00 p m in the county courthouse commissioners room. The Board of County Commissioners will hear arguments for and against the rural district formation. Freeholders in the proposed district are urged to attend.
Miss Mary Lou Stanczyk and Robert Matison wed at St Marys church north of Osceola with Msgr Szmydt presiding. Parents Frank Stanczyk and Carl Matison attended. Sister Joan Stanczyk served as bridesmaid and William Kennedy was best man. Reception followed and the couple departed for a Colorado trip.

Vernon Boden arrived home Sunday after honorable discharge from the army. He had been stationed in New Jersey and plans to help his father on the farm. Ralph Bond also arrived home Saturday from Fort Bliss Texas after his discharge and will join his wife and son Steven visiting her parents. Ralph will enter the University to study engineering.
The Columbus area employment office reports rising August job applications, with 1 480 contacts, 345 new filings, and 504 active files. Farm workers dominate applicant pools. women show strong factory hiring, while construction stays weak.

County Board of Commissioners issues warning to irrigators using road ditches for slush pits in digging wells. Heed the cleanup by October 1 or the county will remove pits at 50 dollars each, charging the cost to adjacent landowners due to flood risk from blocked ditches.
