Lou R. Israel, 72, died suddenly Wednesday morning at St. Francis Hospital after a recent battle with a heart ailment. He had suffered a heart attack weeks earlier and was hospitalized following another attack. He had been improving at the hospital before death. Funeral arrangements were not yet set.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Leibee marked 65 years of marriage with a quiet observance at the Stromsburg home of their daughter Mrs. Herman Anderson and her husband last Saturday. The couple has long resided in Polk County, including Osceola and Shelby, before joining their daughter in Stromsburg.
Stoner Club will meet Wednesday afternoon September 15 at the home of Mrs Charlie Stewart. Mrs Martin Scholz will assist. Stoner School opened Monday with 19 pupils taught by Mrs Dorothy Scott of Shelby. The mother of Mrs Louis Tlamka died Thursday at her son's home near Brainard Nebraska. Funeral services were held Monday at Brainard Catholic Church.
The Lincoln paper notes Miss Peggy Stewart, soon to wed Robert Mills on September 10, has hosted and attended several honor events. A miscellaneous shower occurred midweek, a pantry-recipe shower featured Mrs. M A Mills senior and junior, a 10 o'clock coffee and one-gift shower followed, and a kitchen shower plus a china shower completed the sequence.
Osceola schools opened with 221 students across high and lower grades, up from last year. Improvements include interoffice links and a gift clock for period bells from the 1947 and 1948 classes. Football squad trials begin as 30 boys report, with several lettermen listed. The 1948-49 agenda features four community programs including Misner Players, White Hussars, Leon Smith’s Suki, and The Lesselli Marionettes.

Gerald Jacopke coaches at Osceola with Nebraska University roots and Fremont home. John Adams teaches vocal and instrumental music from Geneva. Paul Major serves as assistant coach and math social science instructor, Midland College Fremont graduate. Dorothy Campbell teaches in Department, from Central City. Marjorie Soderholm teaches home ec geography, graduate of Kearney College, Pep Club advisor.
Two hundred men have registered in two weeks for the On The Farm Training program. A meeting for interested veterans will be at Osceola High School Auditorium on Wednesday September 15 1943 at 7 30 p m. Louis Klein of the State Department of Vocational Education Lincoln will explain the program and help organize the first class with a tentative start date October 1 1948. Maurice Newcomer of Gresham Nebraska is the Veterans Instructor.
Mr and Mrs S B Fox learned Tuesday of Walter Lundgrens death at noon at Grand Island Hospital where he had been admitted Monday He suffered from heart disease He was married to Marie Babe Mickey of this city They had lived in Grand Island for years Funeral services were conducted in Grand Island with burial at Silver Creek cemetery

A group of 16 friends gathered at Laura Lea Monson’s home for a birthday supper and games. Ruth Sigler won a guessing contest, and Laura Lea received many gifts before the group attended a theater party.
About 200 Polk County men age 23 to 26 registered at the Polk County Selective Service Office in Osceola. Most are married or war veterans. 25 are unmarried non veterans. Registrants await draft board setup as questionnaires go out and the office plans full time operation until September 19 to complete roughly 700 registrations. Sandra Schuman notes registrants accept duties with little complaint.
District No 18 families and neighbors dropped by homes around Rising City Shelby Columbus and Omaha for visits dinners and health news. The Ars Poetica contest announced August winners with Mrs Elmer Allinder tying for third in Group A and group B formed for the new year.
Mrs Mary Gerdes leaves for Lake Taneycomo Missouri to attend the Fall Educational Conference of the Nebraska Agency of the Equitable Life Assurance Society. The event runs the 9th through the 12th at Hotel Taneycomo and will be attended by 50 agents and their wives. Gerdes qualified by production in the past six months.
Polk County Extension notes a 1949 Wheat Test Plot with sections on fertilizer treatments and wheat varieties. The report highlights a 1946 Polk County variety test, a 51 year Turkey Red seed line, and seed samples from across farms. Topics include septic tanks, State Fair preparations, 4-H Saddle Club parade invites, and new farming publications and storage materials.
Mr and Mrs W B Dake and Mr and Mrs Clair McCormick and Lanny traveled three weeks across the west coast visiting Yellowstone National Park the Red Woods Santa Monica and Boulder Dam They drove over 5000 miles and met Nebraska friends along the way The Schott family also visited Washington D C New York and Ohio before returning home
Mrs. Wm. Ludden of Ogden Utah arrived Wednesday for a visit of three weeks with her aunt Mrs. E A Walrath.

Osceola players excel at the Omaha All Star events with John Kimiick appearing in every game and McCormick delivering two innings with only one blooper misplayed due to misread signals. The town notes strong football anticipation, Osceola practice under Gerald Jacopke, and upcoming Sept 17 clash with David City. Bud Carman expects Lincoln discharge soon and return home.
