Mr and Mrs Walter Bundy returned from Cozads visit reporting the potato harvest in full swing but not yielding good profits. Large quantities are dumped due to weak demand while about a trainload leaves Cozad each night. One grower says he made only five cents per hundred pounds.
Sheriff Carl North recovered a tool and assorted valuables from the Floyd M Campbell residence in Clay Center after two boys ages seven and nine were involved. The haul included pipes a watch a knife a key ring and various articles of lesser value. Some cigars had been smoked under United Church steps with one boy saying it made him drunk.
Miss Betty McDermand daughter of Mr and Mrs P W McDermand of Crete sailed from New York last week for a year long visit to Britain to take part in the British American teachers exchange program. The McDermand family lived in Silver Creek in the final days of the Silver Creek State Bank Silver Creek Sand.
A North Platte report notes no Mum Day this year after last Tuesday's hail storm nearly destroyed the state farm flower garden. The storm sets back the flower breeding program by about a year and prevents evaluation of seedlings and selections this year.
Alice Schott Sundberg wed Robert Olberding of Hays Springs at St Vincent Catholic church on August 31. Rev John Howe officiated with attendants Jeanice Schott Maid of Honor William Nelson Best Man Mary Ann Olberding and Donald Schott. After a reception at the bride’s home the couple will reside in Hays Kansas where Olberding teaches at Fort Hays State College.
Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Morgan left town last week for their winter location in California, seeking warmer days and a quieter place to rest and enjoy the season.
Government observer Harold Klingman reports a notably cool August with no 100 degree days and only one day reaching 91. Nine days saw highs in the seventies, frosty 38 degree low on the 21st, and 3.99 inches of total precipitation for the month, including 1.36 inches on the 7th.
Mrs. Martha Walgreen announces the engagement of her daughter Ruby to Paul Gustafson son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Gustafson of Polk Nebraska Miss Walgreen attended Luther College and is now a senior at Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing Gustafson has worked in Lincoln since his discharge from the Merchant Marines in 1947.
The Lew is Timm family reunion, held in Kearney this Sunday, drew 150 relatives. Attendees traveled from Merna Ord Scotia Calloway Eustis Cozad Lexington Central City Grand Island Lincoln North Platte Osceola and Denver. Osceola participants included Carl Wieseman family and others, C R Timm and Viola Wieseman among names.
Charles William Warwick born November 26 1883 in London Ohio. He taught in Antelope County and led several rural schools before serving as school superintendent in multiple Nebraska towns. He moved to Osceola in 1939, owned a variety store, and died August 31 1950 after a stroke. Funeral held at Osceola Methodist Church.
A nephew's letter from Vienna August 17 describes wartime Europe. J W Buchta and family note friendly locals, mixed Soviet and American zones, and Russian troops nearby. They discuss attitudes toward occupation, U S information centers, and Nebraska references. They praise food quality and low living costs, with plans to travel to Rome and Naples.
Members of the Polk County Co op Oil Association toured the Co op Refinery in Coffeyville last week. They traveled by chartered bus, then continued to Kansas City to inspect other co op properties and tour a paint factory. They departed August 28 and returned August 30.
Albert W. Gabriel purchases the Osceola Wrecking Company building from Nellie and Lucretha Benson. He plans a new shop that will better serve the public and accommodate his business, razing the former livery barn landmark near the square in Osceola.
The St Francis Hospital news lists births in Osceola with families John Nelson Osceola Garret Mentink Osceola Mrs Ben McCormick Osceola Mrs F P Shelmadine Osceola and Barbara Buresh Osceola. A baby girl weighing 8 pounds 12 ounces was born Wednesday August 30 to Mr and Mrs Virgil Johansen named Jill Elaine.
Observers praise the Polk County Agricultural display at the State Fair in Lincoln describing it as one of the finest booths seen. The green and gold decor centers on a large pumpkin with well arranged grasses and crops, with Carder Throckmorton and volunteer farmers receiving commendation for assembling transporting and setting up the exhibit.

Mr and Mrs Raymond Branting and daughters hosted a pre nuptial buffet Saturday at six in honor of Delores Buhl and Robert Vizal. Attending were Pastor and Mrs M Lewenson Ralph and Maryanna Mr and Mrs Robert Tunnyhill Henry Jr Paul and Kay Ann Peterson Richard Vizal and Mr and Mrs William Buhl Dianne and Dean.
The Sowers Club of Lincoln Nebraska will visit Osceola on Wednesday September 13 arriving about 5 30 p m. The group will tour Osceola then meet at the school auditorium for a dinner and program hosted by Lincoln. Tickets cost 125 and local residents are urged to attend.
The Legion Auxiliary will meet in the Legion Club rooms on Friday September 15 at 2 30 p m. Members are urged to attend the local civic gathering.
The Happy Birthday Club will meet with Mrs Johnnie Tomasevecz on Thursday September 14 at her home in Shelby.
Mrs. Dunn hosted a dinner Monday honoring Fred Dunn's birthday anniversary. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Verland Bauer of Rising City, Ford Netsell of Omaha, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Dunn and their son.

Osceola residents respond to Korea war news with calls for physicals and local civic efforts, while the Sowers Club of Lincoln visits the Gym for a ticketed, all inclusive event.
