Improved Machinery Cuts Haying Costs

The report notes eastern states lag in efficient haying versus the West. On Pennsylvania farms labor per acre drops from eight to four hours using side-delivery rake and hayloader, saving about 1.5 hours per acre in man labor and 0.5 hour per acre in horse work. At 40 cents hourly, this saves about 12 cents per acre, enough to cover rake and loader costs on 30 acres. Unloading hay by hand is costly, but double harpoon or grapple aids help. Wider mowers and rakes increase daily ground coverage and ease work, with 12 to 14 foot rakes preferred for 40+ acre hay farms.
